Surf is #1 in our lives; as a family, we skate a lot when the surfs flat, the suns out, or indoors when the nights are dark. Skateboarding started in Southern California in exactly that way; ‘Sidewalk Surfing’. Kids who surfed would adapt roller-skates onto wood to re-create the surf experience when there were no waves. Since then, in the 70-odd years of skateboard history, things have evolved. A huge culture has been developing; a rich tapestry of styles, approaches, characters and a big, global industry. Surfskating is one approach to skateboarding that resonates with surfers in particular. Although Carver surf skate boards were invented back in the late 90’s with little success, the last couple of years were the catalyst to huge surge in their popularity. They feature a stiffer rear truck and a front truck designed to pivot; the idea being that they simulate the surfing feeling. They also inspire confidence with their ability to carve tight lines and the grip and forgiving feeling of big, soft wheels.

We have been teaching skateboarding for a while at Yonder now, firstly integrated into our surf camps and as of 2023; separate beginner flat sessions and improver skatepark sessions. Tom has been skating for 25 years and is a fully insured, fully accredited skate coach with Skateboard GB. Our skate lessons always have surfing in mind; our approach encourages confidence, we really focus on speed, style and flow. We take a different approach to a lot of the surf skate coaches we see online who use strict drills, cones, tightly prescribed movements and sequences of movement. We look at the surfing we love; the surfing our community loves and aspires to be able to achieve. We look at each individuals styles and approaches to moving that we all have and we try to mix that with confidence to use speed and flow to feel really good sliding sideways. Feeling comfortable, confident, able to move and express ourselves are the ultimate goals of our skate lessons. Linking up lines, maintaining speed, flowing, holding our bodies correctly as we turn corners, expressing ourselves.

We think this is the best way to use skateboarding to improve surfing in the real world, come and join us to find your flow, confidence and smile from ear to ear having fun on a skateboard!

We have a full quiver of skateboards and surfskates from YOW & Carver, Bell Helmets and pad sets for everyone. All our sessions are at quiet skatepark times (usually early mornings) are maximum six women to two coaches.
