Small group size:
We have always ensured that our session sizes are small to ensure everyone attending gets the attention and support necessary to progress at their own individual pace. These small groups also help to build lasting relationships.

Who are they for?

This is a club designed for mothers specifically. The aim is to give the opportunity to mothers that have never tried surfing or those that have been struggling to get in since having children. We have designed this course to help take that first step, to help break down the potential barriers as much as we can and to provide a supportive and slow paced space that will help nurture a love and understanding of the sea, that can be built up and continued into the future.

As a mother myself, I know and recognise how hard it can be to find time for yourself, especially to start something new and commit time and energy outside of your family. I am also a strong believer that this time and energy spent is paramount for our own mental health and the benefits we feel are reflected in our children. This is an area that I am extremely passionate about and want to be able to help build a supportive network of women that can go forward and support each other.

We are incredibly excited to be able to offer this course to the community. We do ask that those signing up to the course are able to commit to the dates that we have offered as best to their ability. We absolutely understand that it is hard to make guarantees as parents but we are also keen that the opportunity we are offering is used to its fullest.

“Sally's surf classes are amazing and she is building up such a fabulous little community!! As a complete beginner I was pretty nervous but the small group sessions are so relaxed and Sally makes sure she works with each of you providing tailored tips and advice for progression. She is incredibly knowledgeable and also takes time to explain the mystery of the charts and how to understand the conditions, which has been so helpful!!
I have learnt so much and can't wait to get back into the sea again! “ Polly, mum of two.

Why are we not providing this for more numbers?

The funding we have was specifically assigned to help build a lasting relationship with the sea. We could do many taster sessions instead but we do not feel that this is the best way to nurture this connection as affectively. We will always continue to secure further funding for future sessions.

Like in all sessions we will focus on general ocean confidence, building and understanding of the different conditions and impact of tides, winds, swell on wave formation.

Important:

Due to the very nature of unpredictable conditions we may not always have swell so will run paddle technique sessions, sea swimming, body surfing and theory on ocean safety if dangerous conditions or excessively big. Though surfing is our focus, as a school we are strong believers that a better surfer is created when students understand the ocean. This means trying all surf crafts and learning to ‘read’ waves and weather patterns. Please be advised that the conditions will not always be perfect. These sessions are intended ‘go out whatever’ the conditions, a way of understanding our sea better which is often the reality of the North Sea. Flat sessions are recognised as important in our surf journey as it’s often during these sessions that we grasp board control and paddle techniques.

These sessions are aimed at building friendships and confidence and providing a more regular option for those not able to be as adaptable due to work/family/travel commitments. Women who have attended these sessions have formed friendships and gained skills that have helped them to become confident and independent surfers and water users.

Sally is a qualified ASI Instructor and SLSGB Life Guard with years of experience surfing in the North Sea, this is a great opportunity to learn to surf with a passionate and experienced instructor.
