This is a new format, designed specifically as an in-depth holistic surf course that covers the concepts, fundamentals and practical aspects of becoming an independent, confident surfer. We employ land based, theory based, practical and photo analysis to set and work on structured individualised goals for each student.
This course is for someone who dreams of being a confident, knowledgeable, independent surfer. Someone who is motivated to embark on a surf journey and reap the rewards of where it takes you!
Location: Tynemouth
Duration: Aim for 2 hours per week - could run over slightly. Some sessions will be indoors, venue TBC and some sessions in the sea/on the beach. There will be plenty of surfing throughout the six weeks but also the theory to back it up - from our experience, this balance is extremely powerful, the learning that takes place outside of the sea if often where things start to make sense.
We have decided to keep this course to five people. All coaching will be with Sally. Tom will be helping out with the photography and surf skate coaching. The photo analysis will be used to feed back to the group and identify patterns, set goals and of course, celebrate successes (and hilarious wipeouts no doubt!)
All equipment is provided (if required) from high quality women’s suits to a range of great boards.
Course Structure
Depending on the forecast each week, we will have a range of sessions pre-planned whilst remaining adaptable to ensure a great balance of land and practical surf.
Surf - We will aim to surf for four of the weeks tackling common frustrations such as paddle technique and board control, timing, positioning, balance, wave selection and how to safely pull out and handle yourself in a line up. Covering various pop up techniques will happen on the beach, in the water and through our photo analysis. Sally will both be in and out of the water during these sessions with support from Tom on land for at least two sessions.
Surf skate - We will do at least one surf skate session, we have Carvers and YOW’s and helmets; don’t worry if you have never skated before. We will work on stance, poise and some joint and muscle sequencing to help to repeat some movements from surfing, developing balance, understanding and muscle memory.
Theory/concept and photo analysis - This will take place indoors with our specific resource videos we have been working on. This is often the ‘penny drop’ stuff from our surf camps.
Photo analysis has proven invaluable to identifying patterns and behaviours allowing us to work together to set goals and find solutions.
Who are they for?
This course is aimed at someone who already puts some time into surfing but perhaps feels stuck. You have the ability to paddle for and catch white water waves independently but are struggling to transition to catching green waves. Someone who is wanting to build confidence and water safety, hone in techniques and gain a better understanding of tides, conditions, wave formation and positioning whilst looking at wider surf concepts.
Each surfer is always individually supported in their surf journey and we work together as a group to encourage and support each other.
“Yonder is a rare gem! Sally's coaching techniques are truly bespoke. By listening to the individual she develops trust that allows you as a surfer take those bold next steps you wouldn't feel confident to make alone.” Laura O’connor.
“I have progressed so much since starting back in June and it's all thanks to Sally. Her small classes mean she has time for everyone. All her tips are gold - she will tell you to change one tiny thing, and it'll change everything, it will just click! Can't wait to try and get booked onto some improver sessions next time they're released. Thanks Sally, Tom and Yonder!” Paula Glancy.
We have boards that form a nice progression for our students, from soft foamies to various sized soft tops, to mini mals, longboards and midlengths. If you have your own board already, thats awesome too.
Community.
We always create a WhatsApp group for our courses, these are a way for the women to stay in touch once the course has ended and a way to share information and photos throughout the course. So many women have formed friendship and surf support groups through these groups.
Important:
Due to the very nature of unpredictable conditions we may not always have swell. It is important when booking on to recognise that flat days can be incredibly useful both in and out of the sea. On days where the sea might be deemed unsafe to surf we have a range of land-based activities as shown above.
These sessions are aimed at building friendships and confidence and providing a more regular option for those not able to be as adaptable due to work/family/travel commitments. Women who have attended these sessions have formed friendships and gained skills that have helped them to become confident and independent surfers and water users.
*In the highly unlikely event we have 6 consecutive weeks of unsafe conditions, we will keep one week as a buffer to rearrange a session as a group.
Sally is a qualified ASI Instructor and SLSGB Life Guard with 16 years of experience surfing in the North Sea, 8 years as a surf instructor. This is a great opportunity to learn to surf with a passionate and experienced instructor.
Tom has 16 years of surf experience, over 20 years of skateboard experience, a 600mm lens and camera that can shoot great sequences and is a total surf nerd and absolute cheerleader of female surfing.
Important disclaimer - 50% refund of the entire club sessions will only be issued if the attendee informs Yonder well in advance that they are unable to attend. Yonder will require at least fourteen days notice so that they can find a replacement. There is no option to obtain refunds if the attendee cancels on individual sessions as it is very hard to find replacements that can slot into an existing course and that is not the intention of these group sessions.
