Yonder is a family collaboration between long time east coast surfer and Finisterre Ambassador Sally McGee and her husband, surfer and professional photographer Tom Bing.

Yonder is proud to support and nurture a growing community of female surfers. We established back in 2018 in order to provide an alternative route for women into surfing. We have been providing quality surf coaching, courses and camps ever since. Community remains at the heart of everything we do, helping those we teach to make connections, feel empowered and develop as confident, independent surfers.

First and foremost, we are a family of surfers. We live and breath surfing and that passion is the driving force behind everything we do. We tip our hats to the innovators, the outsiders, the underground heroines and heroes of our little world.

Sally is well respected in the surfing world for her inclusive approach. Based in Tynemouth, north-east England, she runs Yonder, a surf school, coaching company and surf brand that is helping to empower a community of surfing women in a region where the scene was slow to develop. A background working with the Red Cross and asylum seekers has perhaps informed her nurturing sensibility. Kicking back against the stereotypical portrayal of female surfers to “change the narrative of female surfing in the UK” is another aim.

Community is at the absolute core of what we do.

Through Yonder, lifelong connections have been made, surf buddies found, trips organised and a scene has emerged and continues to evolve. Through our coaching, camps, courses, film nights, pop-up shops and community events we have been quietly nurturing and facilitating a beautiful surf scene; seeing it grow and blossom in the North East of England and beyond.

Yonder Surf Academy is the CIC arm of Yonder, an all-women’s surf school based in North Tyneside. Our mission is to inspire and support marginalised women and girls to build confidence, self-esteem and positive mental health. We have run lessons and training camps for hundreds of women and girls. Feedback from participants and partner charities show the transformative impact we have had, with people detailing how our support has helped them to address depression, anxiety, isolation and low self-esteem.

“It was incredible to offer some parts of the North East culture and spaces to young people who would otherwise be unable to access it”
